What to Expect: Pre-Operative Phase

Before embarking on your blepharoplasty journey, you will have an exclusive consultation with Dr. Manolakakis to explore your aesthetic aspirations and expectations for this refined procedure. During this personalized session, Dr. M will meticulously assess your eyes and the surrounding structures, ensuring that you are an ideal candidate for blepharoplasty. This attentive approach is designed to tailor the experience to your unique needs, promising results that enhance your natural beauty. There are several other preparations to consider, such as medical evaluations, medication reviews, pre-op lifestyle changes, and recovery plans.

What to Expect: Operative Phase

Blepharoplasties are performed under general anesthesia. Dr. M will make precise incisions in the natural creases of the upper eyelids or just below the lash line in the lower eyelids. This placement helps to conceal any resulting scars. For upper eyelid surgery, the surgeon removes excess skin, muscle, and sometimes fat. The incisions are then closed with sutures or surgical adhesive. For lower eyelid surgery, the surgeon may remove or reposition fat deposits, tighten the muscles, and remove excess skin. In some cases, a transconjunctival incision (inside the lower eyelid) is used to avoid external scars. The incisions are typically closed with fine sutures, which are often removed within a week after the surgery.

The duration of the operation varies based on individual factors but generally lasts between 1–2  hours.

What to Expect: Post-Operative Recovery and Care

Following your surgery, you will be taken into recovery where you'll be monitored until awake. You may experience some discomfort which can be managed through prescribed pain medication. Applying cold compresses to the eyes can help reduce swelling and bruising, which are common after-effects which usually subside within a few weeks. In some cases, dissolvable sutures may be used and will dissipate on their own. Non-dissolvable sutures are usually removed within a week to ten days. Patients should avoid touching or rubbing the incision sites during the healing process. Temporary blurred vision or sensitivity to light may occur. Patients should avoid straining their eyes by limiting screen time and reading.

Full recovery time varies among individuals, but most resume usual activities within 2–3 weeks. For a few weeks, you will be instructed to refrain from activities like bending over, lifting heavy objects, strenuous exercises, etc. Protecting the eyes from sun exposure is crucial. Patients should wear dark sunglasses and apply sunscreen to the eyelids when outdoors. The office staff will schedule check-ups to allow Dr. M to monitor your progress and address any concerns.
