What to Expect: Pre-Treatment Phase

The first step in dermal filler treatment is a consultation with Dr. M. During this consultation, he will assess medical history, discuss goals and expectations, and do a full explanation of the process, risks, and outcomes. He will also provide a pre-treatment instructions, which may include avoiding certain medications or supplements that may increase bruising and bleeding.

Before the treatment, it is recommended to avoid blood-thinning medications such as ibuprofen and aspirin, to name a few. Drink lots of water in the days leading up to the treatment to improve skin hydration and avoid alcohol at least 24 hours before the procedure.

What to Expect: Treatment Phase

The dermal filler treatment itself is relatively quick, typically taking between 15 and 60 minutes, depending on the areas being treated. The treatment area is thoroughly cleansed to remove any makeup, oils, or impurities. A topical numbing cream or local anesthetic may be applied to minimize discomfort during the injections. Dr. M. uses a fine needle or cannula to inject the filler into the targeted areas. He may massage the area gently to ensure even distribution and natural-looking results. The practitioner will assess the results and may make additional injections if necessary to achieve the desired outcome.

What to Expect: Post-Treatment Recovery and Care

Patients should avoid touching or massaging the treated areas for at least 24 hours to prevent the filler from moving. Applying ice packs to the treated areas can help reduce swelling and discomfort. Refrain from strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and other activities that may increase blood flow to the face for at least 24 to 48 hours. Swelling and bruising are common after dermal filler injections and usually subside within a few days to a week. Patients can use arnica gel or take arnica tablets to help reduce bruising. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen, can be used to manage any mild discomfort. Patients can usually apply makeup to cover any bruising or redness after 24 hours. Protecting the skin from sun exposure is essential to maintain the results and overall skin health. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

Maintaining good skincare and hydration habits can help prolong the results of the dermal filler treatment. Regular follow-up appointments with Dr. Manolakakis can help monitor the results and determine when touch-up treatments are needed.
