What to Expect: Pre-Operative Phase

Before undergoing the Hybrid laser treatment, you will be required to have an initial consultation with Dr. Manolakakis to discuss your goals and expectations for the procedure. During this consultation, Dr. M will conduct an examination of your skin to determine its suitability for laser resurfacing.

Once the decision to proceed with the procedure has been made, there are several preoperative preparations to consider: Patients will undergo a thorough medical evaluation to ensure they are in good health and fit for surgery. This may include blood tests, imaging studies, and other diagnostic tests as needed. Patients should inform M about any medications they are currently taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements. Some medications may need to be temporarily stopped or adjusted prior to surgery. Patients should avoid taking certain supplements that can increase bleeding risk such as vitamin E or fish oil in the weeks leading up to surgery. Antiviral medication may be prescribed to prevent herpes simplex infections. Patients may be advised to use specific skincare products, such as retinoids or bleaching agents, in the weeks leading up to the procedure to prepare the skin and improve outcomes. Avoid excessive sun exposure and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect the skin before the procedure.

Patients should arrange for transportation on the day of surgery as they will not be able to drive themselves home after undergoing anesthesia. Patients should plan ahead for their recovery period by arranging for help at home if needed. It is recommended that someone stays with them during the first few days following surgery. M and the team will provide specific instructions on when to stop eating or drinking before surgery as well as guidelines regarding showering with antibacterial soap prior to coming in for your procedure.

What to Expect: Operative Phase

Hybrid laser resurfacing is performed under general anesthesia. The skin is thoroughly cleansed to remove any oils, makeup, or impurities. The physician uses the Hybrid laser to deliver short pulses of high-energy light to the targeted areas of the skin. The laser precisely removes the damaged outer layers of the skin while simultaneously stimulating collagen production in the deeper layers. The treated areas may be cooled with a special device to minimize discomfort and reduce the risk of overheating the skin.

The duration of the operation varies based on individual factors but generally lasts between 30 minutes to 2 hours.

What to Expect: Post-Operative Phase

Following your surgery, you will be taken into recovery where you'll be monitored until awake. You may experience some discomfort which can be managed through prescribed pain medication. The treated areas may be covered with protective dressings or ointments to promote healing and prevent infection. Applying cold compresses can help reduce swelling and discomfort. Swelling and redness are common after Hybrid laser resurfacing and typically peak within the first few days, gradually subsiding over the following weeks. Keeping the head elevated and using cold compresses can help minimize these effects. Patients should follow a gentle skincare routine, including regular cleansing and moisturizing, to keep the treated areas clean and hydrated. The use of specific healing ointments may be recommended. The treated skin will begin to crust and peel within a few days, revealing new, healthier skin underneath. Patients should avoid picking at the peeling skin to prevent scarring. Protecting the treated areas from sun exposure is crucial during the healing process. Patients should avoid direct sunlight and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF when outdoors.

Strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and contact sports should be avoided for at least two to four weeks. Most patients can return to work and normal activities within one to two weeks, depending on their comfort level and the nature of their job. Full healing can take several months, with the final results becoming apparent as redness fades and collagen production increases. Subtle changes can continue to occur up to a year post-procedure. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and regular skincare routine, can help prolong the results of the procedure. The office staff will schedule check-ups to allow Dr. M to monitor your progress and address any concerns.
