What to Expect: Pre-Operative Phase

Before your lip lift surgery, you'll have a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Manolakakis, where you'll have the opportunity to share your personal goals and hopes for the procedure. Dr. M. understands that this is a significant step, and he’ll take the time to listen carefully to what you want to achieve. During this consultation, he will thoroughly assess your facial features, with special attention to your lips, philtrum, and overall facial harmony, ensuring that your results will enhance your natural beauty in the most balanced and flattering way.

There are a few things to think about before your surgery, like getting a medical check-up, reviewing your medications, making some simple lifestyle adjustments, and planning for a smooth recovery.

What to Expect: Operative Phase

To keep you comfortable, your lip lift will be performed under general anesthesia. Dr. M. will make the necessary incisions based on the technique chosen for your procedure. For a subnasal lip lift, the incision is made at the base of your nose, following the natural contours to help hide any visible scarring. A small strip of skin is carefully removed, and your upper lip is lifted to the desired position. The amount of skin removed depends on how much lift is needed to achieve the look you want. The incisions are gently closed with fine sutures, which are usually removed within a week. Dr. M. ensures that the incision is aligned with the natural crease under your nose or at the corners of your mouth, making scarring less noticeable.

The length of the surgery can vary depending on individual needs, but it typically takes about 1–2 hours.

What to Expect: Post-Operative Recovery and Care

It’s normal to experience swelling and bruising around your lips and nose after surgery. These are most noticeable in the first few days and will gradually improve over 1 to 2 weeks. Cold compresses can help reduce the swelling. Any pain or discomfort is usually mild and can be managed with either prescription pain medications or over-the-counter options, as recommended by Dr. M. You’ll receive instructions on how to care for your incision. Keeping it clean and applying any prescribed ointments will help with healing and reduce the chance of infection. To promote healing, avoid strenuous activities, bending over, or lifting anything heavy for at least a week. This helps minimize swelling, too. Stick to a soft diet for the first few days to avoid putting pressure on your lips. You’ll also want to avoid foods that require a lot of chewing. It’s best to sleep with your head elevated to help reduce swelling.

Try to avoid sleeping on your face or sides to keep pressure off your lips. Stitches are typically removed 5 to 7 days after surgery. During this appointment, Dr. M. and the team will check how your healing is progressing. Scars are usually very minimal and hidden under your nose or at the corners of your mouth. Over time, they will fade, but it may take several months for them to fully mature. Be sure to protect the area from sun exposure and use sunscreen to prevent darkening of the scar. You’ll start to see results once the swelling subsides, usually within 2 weeks. However, the full effect of the lift and the final appearance of the scars can take 3 to 6 months to fully develop.
