What Is Closed Rhinoplasty?

Closed Rhinoplasty is a minimally invasive surgical technique performed through internal incisions inside the nostrils. This approach allows Dr. Manolakakis to precisely sculpt cartilage, reshape bone structure, and adjust nasal contours, all while preserving the nose’s natural framework.

Ideal for those seeking subtle but meaningful enhancement, Closed Rhinoplasty addresses nasal asymmetry, improves proportions, and creates facial symmetry with a lower-impact recovery.

What to Expect: Pre-Operative Phase

Before your rhinoplasty journey begins, you’ll have a personal and in-depth consultation with Dr. Manolakakis. This is your time to openly share your goals and what you hope to achieve from the procedure. Dr. M. will take the time to carefully examine your nose, including its internal structures, while also considering your skin type, thickness, and overall facial anatomy.

This compassionate and thorough evaluation ensures that rhinoplasty is the right choice for you and that the results will align perfectly with your unique features. We’re here to support you every step of the way, making sure you feel informed, comfortable, and confident as you move forward.

There are several other preparations to consider, such as medical evaluations, medication reviews, pre-op lifestyle changes, and recovery plans.

What to Expect: Operative Phase

Rhinoplasties are performed under general anesthesia. The type and placement of incisions depend on the chosen rhinoplasty technique. Dr. M. separates the skin from the underlying bone and cartilage, which can then be reshaped, reduced, or augmented. This may involve, but is not limited to, removing or rearranging cartilage and bone, adding cartilage grafts, or correcting structural issues such as a deviated septum. Once the desired shape is achieved, the skin is redraped over the newly sculpted framework, and the incisions are closed with sutures. In the case of an open rhinoplasty, the columnar incision is also closed.

Depending on the complexity of the procedure, Dr. M. may place splints or packs inside the nostrils to support the nasal structures during healing and minimize swelling. The duration of the operation varies based on individual factors but generally lasts between 2–5 hours.

What to Expect: Post-Operative Recovery and Care

Following your surgery, you will be taken into recovery, where you'll be monitored until you awake. Your nose may be protected with a splint and external bandages to maintain its new shape and reduce swelling. You may experience some discomfort, which can be managed through prescribed pain medication. Swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes are common and typically subside within two weeks. Keeping your head elevated and using cold compresses can help minimize these effects. emporary nasal congestion and difficulty breathing through the nose are common due to internal swelling and any nasal packing. Non-dissolvable stitches, if used, are usually removed within a week to ten days. Patients should avoid touching or rubbing the incision sites during the healing process. Strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and bending over should be avoided for at least two weeks.

Most patients can return to work and normal activities within ten to fourteen days, depending on their comfort level and the nature of their job. Dr. M. will provide instructions based on your circumstances. Protecting the nose from sun exposure is crucial. You should always wear hats and apply sunscreen to the nose when outdoors. The office staff will schedule check-ups to allow Dr. M. to monitor your progress and address any concerns.
